A22 COMMENCES DAMAGE CLAIM PROCESS AGAINST UEFA
- Follows failed 7-month period of negotiations
Madrid, 24 November 2025 – A22 Sports Management (“A22”) announces that on November 21, 2025 it initiated the compulsory MASC procedures, as per Spanish Law, prior to the commencement of a legal process against UEFA seeking compensation for damages suffered due to UEFA’s abuse of its dominant position as the monopoly operator of cross-border European club football competitions.
On December 21, 2023, the Grand Chamber of the Court of Justice of the European Union (“CJEU”) ruled that UEFA abused its dominant monopoly position in the market for cross-border club football competitions in violation of EU competition law. As part of its ruling, the CJEU required UEFA to open the market to third-party organizers such as A22.
Despite clear rulings from three separate European courts – including the CJEU and a Spanish appeals court, UEFA continues to maintain regulations and practices that directly contradict judicial decisions. This includes new rules introduced in 2024, after the CJEU’s landmark judgment. By defying these court rulings, UEFA now faces significant potential damage claims from clubs, and A22.
The 2025 Negotiations with UEFA
In December 2024, A22 requested that UEFA recognize the Unify League, its proposal for new pan-European competitions. The request was fully consistent with the requirements of the CJEU ruling. Thereafter, A22 engaged in good faith negotiations with UEFA for seven months, (between March and September 2025) in an effort to agree a comprehensive, and cooperative solution to the ongoing disputes. During these negotiations A22 made significant concessions to bridge the gap between its Unify League proposal and the current UEFA club competitions. A22’s proposals focused on three critical issues: Improved format, modernized governance and the implementation of the Unify streaming platform in order to bring greater affordability and state-of-the-art technology to fans viewing matches at home. Despite these substantial compromises, no agreement was reached.
Therefore, the only appropriate step going forward is to seek compensation for the damages suffered as a result of UEFA’s ongoing illegal behavior.
